Fountain Hills has developed into a rich and beautiful art community. Visitors and residents can enjoy public art or visit one of the art galleries.
FOUNTAIN HILLS PUBLIC ART
The public art collection was set in motion in 1997 when Jackie Miles co-founded the Fountain Hills Arts Council and her husband, Jerry Miles, was elected mayor of the town. That same year, the Arts Council was designated as the authorized agency for the development and promotion of public art.
The Miles’ purchased the first piece, “Precious Cargo”, in honor of Jerry’s mother after her death. A few months later, Jerry convinced the library to purchase “A Good Book” to place by the entrance.
The two pieces have grown into a magnificent 150-piece public art collection, the largest of its kind in the Southwest. Each piece has been funded by private donation, community fundraisers, and the town’s “1 percent for art” fee from commercial construction.
Sculptures, murals, painting, photography, and three-dimensional art can be found in Centennial Circle, the River of Time Museum, library, community center, Town Hall, Avenue of the Fountains, and Fountain Park. Other pieces are sprinkled around the community.
Fountain Hills Public Art is co-sponsored by “I Love Fountain Hills” (aka Fountain Hills Cultural & Civic Association) and the Town of Fountain Hills. For a self-guided Art Walk Guide, visit https://homesinfountainhills.com/about-fountain-hills/ .
