Like most other events in Fountain Hills, the Balloon Glow began with the vision of one individual who uttered the words, “What if…”
Phyllis Kern of Kern Entertainment LLC started the Balloon Glow in 2018. Like everyone else, she was astounded by the turnout of thousands of guests for the free event.
This year’s event on December 28th will include a food booth by Kiwanis, the Fountain Hills Food Cart, and Fountain Hills Water & Ice. Visitors are encouraged to patronize nearby restaurants.
Fountain Hills has a rich history with hot air balloons, harkening back to the “Great Fair,” a co-venture with local public television station Channel 8 in the 1980s. Billed as a Southwestern Art Festival, one of the highlights was an early morning “Hare and Hound” hot air balloon chase from the north side of Fountain Park, over Fountain Lake (a little dicey at times!) and to the surrounding desert where chase vehicles would retrieve their balloon team. It was great fun to see and hear the colorful monsters lumber upwards.
This year’s Balloon Glow will feature six tethered and glowing hot air balloons. The family-friendly event has free admission and free parking.
