The Fountain Hills Coalition’s mission through its community-wide collaboration is to reduce substance abuse among youth ages 12 through 18. One of their initiatives is a permanent prescription drug drop box in the town hall for the disposal of unwanted or expired prescription drug medications. A joint effort between the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Fountain Hills, and the Fountain Hills Coalition led to the installation of a permanent drop box in 2014.
Located in the lobby of town hall, the prescription drop box is like a mail box. The drop box has a slot at the top to pull open, and drop in unused prescriptions. The box is secured, and is only opened when a sheriff’s deputy opens it. Medication is destroyed using a secure process that documents the amounts of medications and the date it was destroyed. Prescriptions of pill and patches are accepted. Prescriptions in the forms of the liquids, inhalers, epi pens, and syringes are not acceptable. Pills need to be kept in the original bottles, and personal information needs to be removed.
Drop off hours are between Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm in the Town Hall Lobby. If you have any questions, please contact the Fountain Hills Coalition at 480-837-2047.
