Every February, the Hashknife Pony Express makes a 200-mile journey from Holbrook, Arizona to Scottsdale, Arizona. They carry 20,000 pieces of mail on horseback to be delivered at post offices along the way. More than two dozen riders dressed in authentic cowboy attire are led by the Navajo County Hashknife Sheriff’s Posse. Each rider is sworn in as an honorary mail messenger.
Fountain Hills is one of the lucky locations along this route. Riders are expected to arrive at the Fountain Hills post office at 3:00 pm. Spectators can watch them ride west up Avenue of the Fountains on their approach to the post office at La Monatan and Avenue of the Fountains.
We sat down with Captain Mark Reynolds of the Hashknife Pony Express last year and he shared some of the history of this event with us.
